The results of the UI GreenMetric 2025, which evaluates universities around the world in the field of sustainability, have been announced. Istanbul Kültür University’s Vice Rector and Director of SÜRKAM, Prof. Dr. Burcu Yavuz Tiftikçigil assessed Istanbul Kültür University’s strategic progress on its sustainability journey, noting significant advancement both globally and nationally.

Defining sustainability as “not a sudden leap, but a long-term development process advanced through steady steps,” Prof. Dr. Burcu Yavuz Tiftikçigil highlighted IKU’s systematic management of this process. Summarizing the university's performance in UI GreenMetric 2025, she stated: “Among 1,715 universities worldwide, Istanbul Kültür University ranked 1057th, achieving a meaningful rise compared to the previous year.”

Education, Research, and Environment: IKU’s Strengths

Noting that the university stood out in education, research, and waste management according to the 2025 UI GreenMetric results, Prof. Dr. Burcu Yavuz Tiftikçigil stated that the ranking in education and R&D increased from 1,344 in 2024 to 915 in 2025. Prof. Dr. Burcu Yavuz Tiftikçigil stated that this result demonstrates the increase in the university’s academic production capacity and the strengthening of sustainability-focused research.

She also explained that the ranking for Waste Management improved dramatically, rising from 1.330 in 2024 to 312 in 2025. This advancement marks a significant step indicating tangible improvements in sustainability standards across campus operations.

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Art Gallery (IKUAG) continues the 2025-2026 art season with an original exhibition inspired by the sea, memory, and minimal aesthetics. The painting exhibition titled "The Sailor's Diary; Minimal Images," in which artist Prof. İhsan Doğrusöz conveys his inner relationship with the sea through simple yet profound impressions, met with art lovers at the IKU Art Gallery on Wednesday, December 10.

The opening speeches for the exhibition, organized by the Fine Arts Application and Research Center (GSUAM), were delivered by our Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver, our Rector Prof. Dr. Fadime Üney Yüksektepe, our Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design Prof. Dr. Mehmet Üstünipek, and Painter Prof. İhsan Doğrusöz.  The opening speeches emphasized the light that art sheds on the inner journey of human beings and the transformative effect of the sea on artists.

The exhibition brings together abstractions distilled from Doğrusöz's personal sea journal, centering on themes of tranquility, memory, journey, and inner depth. The works offer a multi-layered reading experience, reflecting both the real-time emotions experienced by a sailor and the mental maps of an artist. Inviting art lovers to a poetic, simple, and impressive narrative language, the painting exhibition titled "The Sailor's Diary; Minimal Images" can be visited at the IKÜ Art Gallery in the Ataköy building on the Bakırköy Campus until January 30, 2026.

The patent application titled “Piperazine-Substituted Quinone Compound with Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity and Its Synthesis Methods” (application no. 2024/010247), co-invented by Prof. Dr. Sevim Akyüz from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Letters at Istanbul Kültür University, has been officially registered.

We congratulate our professor and thank her for her valuable contributions to scientific productivity.

The Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Vocational School successfully completed the on-site evaluations carried out as part of the MEDEK, TURAK, and YÖKAK accreditation processes. Visits were conducted by MEDEK for the Programs of Public Relations and Publicity, Computer Programming, Banking and Insurance, and Flight Operations Management programs; by TURAK for the Program of Tourism and Hotel Management; and by YÖKAK for institution-level quality assurance processes at the vocational school.

As part of the process, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Fadime Üney Yüksektepe, visited the Vocational School and provided evaluations.

Fatmanur Melis Koçak, an alumni of the Department of Communication and Design, achieved significant success at the 11th Gio Awards with the graduation project she prepared under the consultancy of Lecturer Ali Nazim Beşikçi in the 2024-2025 Academic Year. Gio Awards, organized by the Fantasy and Science Fiction Arts Association (FABISAD) in memory of doyen researcher Giovanni Scognamillo, is an important organization that makes visible and encourages the production of literature and visual arts in the genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror in Türkiye. Our alumni, who was shortlisted in the "Unpublished Comic" category, was deemed worthy of the "Achievement Award" as a result of jury evaluation. The work titled "What Remains of the Wheel" which was exhibited during the summer term in the student affairs area of our university and the GMK 44th Graphic Design Exhibition, deals with the themes of human beings in the modern world, such as loneliness and alienation, on a dystopian plane.

Women’s Solidarity Club organized a meaningful event on Friday, December 5, 2025, at the Design Factory in the Ataköy building, Bakırköy Campus, featuring Art Director Ezgi Şener. Around 40 students took part in the talk and workshop held as part of the “December 5 Women’s Rights Day.”

During the event, discussions focused on the historical significance of the political rights granted to Turkish women under the leadership of Atatürk, key milestones in women’s struggle for rights, and awareness of ongoing gender inequalities today. Ezgi Şener highlighted the transformative power of women’s solidarity in the face of violence and inequality, offering inspiring examples to the participants.

In the workshop segment of the program, students explored how women can transform solidarity into concrete action when they come together. Through hands-on activities, the culture of solidarity was reinforced, and creative methods for strengthening gender awareness were discovered.

This event, organized by the Women’s Solidarity Club, contributed to students’ awareness while serving as a meaningful gathering that strengthened the spirit of solidarity within our university.

The "Aviation Summit-7" organized by IKU Vocational School on Friday, December 5, 2025, brought together experts in the aviation industry with our students. The moderator of the summit, which was held at the Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy Campus, was Lecturer Evren Yılmaz and Lecturer Esra Çimen Atlı. The event shed light on many areas of aviation, from flight operations to cabin services, from air traffic control to technical maintenance. This special summit, where valuable speakers from different units of the sector shared their experiences, created an inspiring atmosphere for our students' career journeys.

Games for Change Türkiye, the European branch of the international platform Games for Change which highlights the power of games in promoting education, well-being, sustainability, civic engagement, and a more equitable future, held its 2025 Festival on December 6-7. This major event in Türkiye’s game design field brought together the gaming industry, academia, and students.

On the second day of the event, our Head of the Department of Digital Game Design, Assoc. Prof. Zeynep Koçer Göztepe, spoke at the panel titled “Gender Equality, Diversity, and Community Building in Gaming.” She offered participants a comprehensive framework on gender equality and inclusivity in games from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

In her speech, Assoc. Prof. Zeynep Koçer Göztepe highlighted a compelling approach that distinguishes creativity from the tools used in game development. Emphasizing that creativity and artistic vision are what truly define a game’s character and emotional impact, she stated: “Tools change. Today it’s Blender, tomorrow it will be something else. But what defines your creativity is your imagination, not the tools you learn.” With these words, she underlined that a designer’s true strength lies in their creative mindset.

A workshop titled "Health Tourism Problems and Solutions" was organized by the Program of Medical Documentation and Secretarial on Wednesday, December 10, at the Design Factory in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy Campus. In the workshop, held with the contributions of our Head of the Program of Medical Documentation and Secretarial Lecturer Emin Aksan and Prof. Dr. Selma Söyük; current problems encountered in the field of health tourism were evaluated, the opinions of stakeholders were discussed and solutions were developed.

Organized by the Dean of Students Office, the 2025-2026 Academic Year Fall Semester Student Advisory Council Meeting was held on Friday, December 5, 2025, in the Senate Room of the Ataköy building, Bakırköy Campus. Moderated by our Dean of Students, Assoc. Prof. Gamze Alptekin, the meeting was attended by Vice Deans Assist. Prof. Tuğba Özışık and Doğa Kurtyiğit, as well as the Quality Ambassadors. The meeting addressed topics aimed at enhancing students’ academic success, alongside discussions on social, cultural, and sports activities at the university, academic processes, and students’ expectations, requests, and suggestions concerning the physical spaces on campus. Questions, opinions, and recommendations from students were also heard, allowing for mutual evaluation.

In collaboration with the Department of Public Relations and Advertising and the IKU Creative Club, the event “Creative Talks 4” was held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. The session hosted one of the most influential figures in the advertising and communication worlds, Cüneyt Devrim, CEO of HAVAS Istanbul. The discussion focused on artificial intelligence technologies that are shaping the future of the sector, as well as their impacts on brands, agencies, and creative professionals. Devrim emphasized that AI is not merely an automation tool, but also a partner that expands and accelerates creative processes, enabling bolder ideas to emerge. He shared valuable advice on career paths with students of the Department of Public Relations and Advertising.

Students from the Department of Communication and Design attended a talk titled “Professionalism in Painting and Artistic Sensibility” on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, organized by the Fine Arts Application and Research Centre (GSUAM). With the participation of our Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Üstünipek, Prof. İhsan Doğrusöz discussed the challenges encountered in art production and shared his professional experiences drawing from his own artistic journey. Prof. İhsan Doğrusöz also spoke about strategies and methods for how artworks, particularly paintings but also other art forms, meet audiences in Türkiye and around the world.

The Women’s Solidarity Club organized an event titled “Letters of Solidarity” on Friday, November 28, 2025, at 14.00 in the 3rd-floor multipurpose hall in the Ataköy building, Bakırköy Campus. Attorney Yağmur Birdal from the Istanbul Bar Association’s Women’s Rights Centre, who participated in the event as a speaker, provided information about the meaning of “November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women”, legal avenues, and the work of the Istanbul Bar Association’s Women’s Rights Centre. Participants wrote letters of solidarity containing their feelings and messages of support to women who have experienced violence. The letters were added to a digital archive, creating a lasting record of solidarity.

The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences held a "Summer Work and Travel Program Presentation" event on Wednesday, December 3, from 12:00 to 13:00 in the L-04 amphitheater at the Küçükçekmece Campus. Ebru Nisa Karabiber from Ozman Yurtdışı Eğitim participated in the event as a speaker.

Students who have experienced the Work and Travel program, Simge Bozkurt (Department of International Trade and Finance), Efe Ertuğvat (Department of Business Administration), Selim Özyüksel (Department of Economics), and Arda Ragıp Yıldız (Department of Political Science and International Relations), also participated in the event and shared their experiences.

IKU Technology Transfer Office, IKUANTS TEKMER, and IEEE IKU collaborated to organize an event titled "Embedded System Technologies and Applications in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. The event, held in the multipurpose hall on the 4th floor of the Ataköy building on the Bakırköy Campus, featured ÖZDİSAN INC. Electronics Education Coordinator Semih Atakuru as a speaker. Numerous academics and students from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the Department of Computer Engineering, and the Program in Computer Programming attended the event, which provided comprehensive information on the convergence of embedded system technologies with artificial intelligence, current industry applications, and future technological trends. Participants listened with interest to the presentation, which brought together theoretical knowledge with industry experience.

In collaboration with the Department of Public Relations and Advertising and the Performing Arts Club, an event titled "The Language of Images: In Pursuit of Meaning in Photography" was held on Wednesday, December 10. The event, held at the Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall in the Ataköy building on the Bakırköy Campus, featured Koray Peközkay, Communicator & Entrepreneur, as a speaker. The event, which explored the social memory, development, and impact of photography from past to present through examples, featured important advice for the future of the industry shared with students from the Department of Public Relations and Advertising.

At the Games for Change 2025 Istanbul event hosted by Bahçeşehir University, one of the remarkable presentations was made by Şeyma Nur Tahmaz, a lecturer at the Department of Digital Game Design. Her paper titled "Same Walls, Different Worlds: Urban and Virtual Accessibility" stood out as one of the few talks presented within the scope of "Critical and Practical Perspectives in Effective Game Design", one of the important themes of this year's event.

Lecturer Tahmaz comprehensively discussed the historical development of accessibility in urban areas, relevant laws, and the implementation processes of these laws in city life. Then associated these developments with the digital gaming world and explained how accessibility practices have been reflected in the gaming industry over the years with examples.

Referring to different types of accessibility in her presentation, Lecturer Şeyma Nur Tahmaz emphasized the importance of visual accessibility (such as color blindness modes, readable interface designs) and auditory accessibility (such as subtitles, voice prompts, adjustable audio channels) features in the player experience. She underlined that accessibility-oriented design is an indispensable part of a gaming culture that includes every player.

Lecturer Tahmaz's presentation reminded that both urban and digital spaces have similar obstacles and opportunities, and offered an inspiring perspective that accessibility in games should be considered a fundamental design principle.

Combining historical context, practical design approaches, and critical evaluations, this paper made a valuable contribution to the impactful and awareness-raising content of Games for Change 2025 Istanbul.

The book “The Wish Tree in Turkish Cinema” by Assoc. Prof. Gizem Şimşek Kaya, a faculty member of our Department of Radio, Television, and Cinema, has been published. In her work, Assoc. Prof. Gizem Şimşek Kaya examines the uncanny transformation of wishing trees in horror cinema.

Published under the İzan Publishing label, “The Wish Tree in Turkish Cinema” traces the motif of the wishing tree within folklore as well as the broader global tradition of tree cults, before turning to films in Turkish horror cinema that employ the wishing tree in unsettling ways. The journey is accompanied by a series of eerie wishing-tree illustrations designed by Alper Kaya, adding a visual dimension to the reader’s experience.

In collaboration with the School of Foreign Languages and the Career Club, the “Meet 2 Talks” event was held on Monday, December 1, 2025, at 14.00 in the Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall in the Ataköy building, Bakırköy Campus. At the event, featuring Mustafa Özmen as the speaker, students were offered a comprehensive perspective on English and were provided with valuable insights into professional life.

The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences held a seminar titled "Sustainability in Business & Economics" on Wednesday, December 10, from 12:30 to 13:00 in the B502 seminar hall at the Küçükçekmece Campus. Dr. Jihan U. Justo from Cebu Technological University participated as a speaker at the event. In her presentation titled "Sustainability in Business & Economics," Dr. Justo discussed the current effects of sustainability on businesses and economic structures. The seminar included an assessment of sustainable development, environmental awareness, corporate sustainability strategies, and future applications.

Assoc. Prof. Perihan Taş Öz, Head of our Department of Radio, Television, and Cinema, served as a main jury member in the international category at the "T-AIFF International Artificial Intelligence Film Festival," held at Marmara University from December 9-11, 2025, with Director Tolga Karaçelik as foreman.

The Arcade area, one of the liveliest sections of the "Games for Change 2025 Istanbul" event hosted by Bahçeşehir University, featured impressive and innovative games this year. Among these games, one of the most popular was "Monkey Business," developed by Res. Assist. Orhan Yavuz Erhan and his team from the Department of Digital Game Design, consisting of students from Bahçeşehir University's Master's Program in Game Design.

Originally developed during a Game Jam organized as part of European Game Science Lab 2025 – Biases in Games, Monkey Business quickly gained attention and was transformed into a more comprehensive project. The game's presentation in the Games for Change Arcade area attracted intense interest from visitors; many participants expressed their eagerness to see the full version of the game.

Monkey Business is conceived as a third-person action game with a satirical narrative, focusing on carrying out orders in a fictional oppressive regime. With its humorous yet critical approach, it stands out as a game that encourages players to reflect on authority, obedience, and social structures.

Res. Assist. Orhan Yavuz Erhan, who took on the roles of 3D production, lead development, and game design within the team, played a key role in shaping the game's visual identity and gameplay mechanics. Other graduate students on the team also contributed to the project's realization as a holistic experience through their contributions in 2D art, development, sound design, and narrative.

Monkey Business, which achieved great success in the Arcade area of Games for Change 2025 Istanbul, was among the most talked-about projects of the event with both its creative concept and strong teamwork.

In collaboration with the Department of Public Relations and Advertising and the Effective Communication Club, an event titled "The New Language of Design" was held on Tuesday, December 9. During the event, which featured Salihanur Alakuş, Graphic Design Specialist at Haber Global, as a guest speaker, the impact of new generation design approaches on the field of communication was evaluated through projects, and digital trends and what will be important for the sector in the future were shared with students from the Department of Public Relations and Advertising.

The ANTSPARK Pre-Incubation Program, carried out by IKÜANTS TEKMER, continues to provide entrepreneurs with the competencies they need in their journey from the idea stage to commercialization.

The IKU Creative Club, one of the student clubs in the Department of Public Relations and Advertising, organized an event titled "Visionboard" on Thursday, December 11. The event, held at INNSide in the Ataköy building on the Bakırköy Campus, was attended by students from the Department of Public Relations and Advertising as well as students from other departments. Students expressed their expectations for the future through creative applications and enjoyed refreshments provided by the event sponsors.

Ziya Erdem, Member of the Board of Directors at Sanko Energy, participated as a speaker in the seminar held on Thursday, December 11, as part of the "IE3501-Economics" course offered by the Department of Industrial Engineering.

The Department of Cartoon and Animation will hold an Alumni Panel to allow our students to benefit from the experiences of our graduates. The event will feature our alumna and current department instructor, Lecturer Hande Sünneli, as the speaker. As part of the ANTSPARK Pre-Incubation Program carried out by IKUANTS TEKMER, a MasterClass will be organized to inform participants about business development, strategy, access to the entrepreneurship ecosystem, and early-stage growth dynamics. The Dean of Students Office - Kültür Point will organize “Turkish Sign Language Training” to support healthy communication with individuals who are hearing-impaired, increase social awareness, and instil a sense of social responsibility in our students. The Department of Business Administration will hold a conference titled “The Path of Social Responsibility: The Heartwarming Side of Social Responsibility Work” to instil social responsibility awareness in students. An event titled "We Are Talking About Felâtun Bey and Râkım Efendi" will be organized by the Literature Club in order to create a conversation network about literature. The event will be held on Thursday, December 18, 2025, between 10.00-11.00 in the 1st floor multi-purpose hall in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy Campus.

The Department of Industrial Engineering will organize a technical trip to Ekol Logistics on Thursday, December 18 at 12:00 in order for students to learn about warehouse planning and the processes in the warehouse.

Department of New Media and Communication will organize a technical trip to Habertürk Journalism Inc. on Thursday, December 18, at 13.00 in order for students to observe the working processes of a professional media organization on site and to increase their knowledge level about news production and broadcasting practices.

By the Department of Basic Education a panel titled "First Steps of the Academic Journey: Master's Degree Through the Eyes of an Alumni" will be held in order to introduce the Department's master's program, encourage students to graduate education and ensure in-house academic continuity. The event, where Ankara Provincial Directorate of National Education Hilal Çetin, Teacher Begüm Kırkan and PhD Student Nuray Deldal will be speakers, will be held on Thursday, December 18, at 13.00 at the Küçükçekmece Campus.

A panel titled "The Female Face of Leadership" will be organized by the Gender Equality Club on Thursday, December 18, at 16.00 in the 3rd floor multi-purpose hall on the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy Campus. Ziraat Bank Branch Manager Reyhan Yalçınkaya Sönmez will attend the event as the speaker.

A trip to Pera Museum will be organized by the ELT Club on Thursday, December 18, at 16.00 in order for students to increase their cultural knowledge through museum-based learning, to examine works of art from a critical perspective and to raise awareness about the importance of culture-language relationship in foreign language teaching.

Musicians Cemalyon and İbrahim Orazov, who have gained great acclaim with their performances in public spaces in Istanbul and attracted great attention on social media, will meet with art lovers at the "New Year's Concert" on Thursday, December 18, at 19.30 in the Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center at the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy Campus. In cooperation with the Health Club and the Medical Documentation and Secretarial Program a trip will be organized to Ataşehir District Health Directorate on Friday, December 19, at 10.00 in order for students to observe the document flow and archive processes in the health institution, and to get to know the institutional archive order and document storage principles in practice.

In cooperation with the Health Club and the Medical Documentation and Secretarial Program, a trip to Marmara University Central Library will be organized on Friday, December 19, at 13.30 in order for students to observe the functioning of a library and access to information resources on site, and to gain awareness about health sciences librarianship.
